about

Between 1994 and 1996, Weezer recorded an unfinished space-themed rock opera called Songs From The Black Hole. It was awesome and terrible and inspiring (and lyrically problematic). There were rumors about it online and when I was in high school, somebody on a forum I frequented had posted some of the leaked demos. I started hoarding them and reading through fan theories, trying to figure out the intended tracklisting. It was cool. Rivers also dropped some easter eggs on MySpace of never-before-heard melodies as handwritten sheet music, which I transposed. I remember feeling special.

SFTBH was my favorite "album" at the time and it inspired me to write my own rock opera. This was also my first attempt at writing from the perspectives of different characters, which I really enjoyed. The story sucked though. It was supposed to be about a turmultuous love triangle, but seeing as how I was a teenager with no dating experience, I ran out of steam pretty quickly and moved on to other things. The experiment did give me an excuse to work with other people however -- and I even got to write songs with a girl I had a crush on. One of them made it on here and it's called "Enlighten", inspired by the nature walks she and I would take together and the long conversations we often had about faith, humanity, and love. We had a really great friendship.

A year or two later, I fell in love with someone else. She was in a relationship at the time and our feelings for each other went largely unspoken, but it was stupid obvious. In fact, our chemistry was so palpable that everyone assumed we were dating. It could never be more than that though. She told me we were "star-crossed lovers" and I believed her. It sucked. I romanticized her greatly and wrote two love songs for her, "I've Got You Tonight" and "I Want To Be Your Man". I must have been 18 or 19 at the time.

The last song "I Left the City" is written by English singer-songwriter Alex Highton. I had come across his music on MySpace and became really fascinated by this tune in particular. I recorded a cover, uploaded it to my page and sent him message, telling him how much I liked his music. To my surprise, he took the time to listen to it, as well as my other stuff, and complimented my rendition. It meant the world to me. It was also my first introduction to minor chord progressions, so I guess it kind of paved the way for the type of music I ended up writing later on.
